Routine oral examinations and hygiene cleanings offered by our Saint-Laurent dentists can help to prevent dental issues from arising and affecting your smile.
Oral Examinations
Routine oral examinations, ideally scheduled twice per year, gives your dentist the chance to identify any emerging oral health issues in your mouth and craft a treatment plan to deal with them.
Over the course of your exam, your dentist will look closely at the health of your teeth, gums, jaws and other oral structures. Exams may also include oral cancer screenings, x-rays and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer is capable of affecting any part of your mouth or surrounding tissues. Throughout your exam, your dentist will check your neck, lips, face, throat, gums and tongue for signs of oral cancer which may be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
In order to keep your smile healthy between your dental appointments, make sure to brush and floss your teeth twice per day.
Hygiene Cleaning
Either before or after your examination, your dental hygienist will perform a deep clean of your gums and teeth in order to prevent and treat disease.
To start, they will use a scaler to remove any plaque or tartar which have built up. Next, they will use coarse toothpaste and a polisher in order to remove any stains or plaque which are left over. This will be followed by a flossing of your teeth and gums as a final touch.
Fluoride Treatment
If you are at high risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps rebuild tooth enamel which can reverse or even prevent tooth decay.
